Best of the Best is the new project from Hasan Minhaj and Prashanth Venkataramanujam, created after they wrapped Patriot Act in 2020. Both felt drained from the heavy political work and wanted to make something lighter and joyful.
They landed on a coming‑of‑age comedy about South Asian college kids, inspired by their own experiences. Minhaj (UC Davis) and Venkataramanujam (University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign) remembered the drama, cliques, and gossip of campus life — and realized that everything led back to the dance team.
Dance teams have long been a space for South Asian community building on U.S. campuses, often centered around Bollywood‑inspired competitions. The film is designed as a love letter to that moment in college when culture, identity, and friendship all collide.
