The story starts on the Polynesian island of Motunui. The people there really honored Te Fiti, the goddess of nature. She was actually a living island. A long time ago, she used a green stone as her heart to give life to the ocean. That stone was the source of her magic. One day, the demigod Maui stole her heart. About a thousand years passed, and the ocean picked Moana for a special job. She is the daughter of Chief Tui. Her parents tried hard to keep her away from the water because they wanted her to become the next chief. Sixteen years later, a bad sickness attacked the island. The plants died and the fish vanished. Moana suggested sailing past the reef with her pet pig, Pua, to see what was wrong, but her dad said it was forbidden.
Moana tried to sail out anyway, but the waves were too powerful and she crashed. That afternoon, her grandmother Tala took her to a hidden cave full of boats. She revealed that their ancestors were actually sailors. They stopped voyaging when Maui stole the heart because the ocean became unsafe. Tala explained that the darkness was killing their home. She told Moana she had to find Maui and make him return the heart. Tala gave Moana the stone. When the grandmother fell very ill, she told Moana to go find the demigod immediately.

Moana sets sail on a boat from the cave, and her silly rooster, Heihei, unknowingly comes along. They get caught in a huge storm and crash onto an island where she finally finds Maui. At first, Maui just brags about all the great things he has done. When Moana asks him to return the heart, he says no and traps her in a cave so he can steal her boat. Moana manages to escape and confronts him again. He reluctantly lets her stay on the boat. Suddenly, they are attacked by the Kakamora, a group of coconut pirates who want the heart. Luckily, Moana and Maui are smart enough to get away from them.
Moana tells Maui that he isn’t a hero anymore because he caused the curse. She convinces him to fix his mistake. However, Maui says he needs his magic fish hook first. It is hidden in the Realm of Monsters with a giant crab named Tamatoa. While Moana distracts the crab, Maui grabs his hook, but he has trouble using his magic.
The crab almost wins, but Moana uses her quick thinking to save them both. Later, Maui shares a sad secret about how his parents left him as a baby. The gods gave him powers because they felt sorry for him. Moana encourages him, and soon he teaches her how to navigate the ocean as they become close friends.
They finally arrive at Te Fiti’s island, but the lava monster, Te Kā, attacks them instantly. Moana refuses to turn back, and in the fight, Maui’s hook gets badly damaged. Maui is scared he will lose his magic forever, so he leaves Moana behind. Moana feels hopeless and cries. She asks the ocean to take the heart back and choose someone else.
The ocean listens and takes the stone, but then the spirit of her grandmother appears. She inspires Moana to be brave. Moana grabs the heart again and sails back to fight the monster. Maui returns to help her because he changed his mind. He fights Te Kā to give Moana time, even though his hook gets destroyed.
Moana looks for the goddess but realizes that the angry monster Te Kā is actually Te Fiti without her heart. The ocean clears a path for Moana. She returns the heart, and the monster turns back into the beautiful goddess Te Fiti. She heals the ocean and the islands. Maui apologizes to her, and she fixes his magic hook and Moana’s boat. Then, she turns back into a peaceful island. Moana says goodbye to Maui and sails home to her parents. She becomes the new chief and leads her people to sail the ocean again, just like their ancestors.
