During a Good Friday service, something terrible happens. Wicks is found dead in a storage closet near the pulpit. He has been stabbed in the back with a knife made from a devil-shaped lamp. Earlier, Jud had taken that lamp from a bar and thrown it through a church window.
Even though there is no clear proof, many people suspect Father Jud may be involved in Wicks’s death.
Police chief Geraldine Scott calls famous detective Benoit Blanc to solve the mystery of Wicks’s death. Blanc believes Father Jud is innocent, so he asks Jud to help with the investigation, even though Chief Scott does not agree.
After Wicks is buried in his grandfather Prentice’s mausoleum, Jud and Blanc talk to people from the church. They learn that just before he died, Wicks had suddenly turned his back on his followers during a meeting.
A man named Cy Draven, a failed politician, shares a shocking secret. He says Wicks believed he had found Prentice’s lost fortune. Wicks was planning to use the money to start a political career with Cy. Wicks had also discovered that Cy was his secret son.
Feeling tired and upset, Jud decides to leave the investigation.
Just before Chief Scott can arrest Father Jud, Martha, Wicks’s former assistant, returns and decides to tell the truth.
She explains that before he died, Prentice swallowed a valuable diamond. That diamond was the key to Wicks’s missing fortune. Prentice’s daughter Grace wanted the diamond badly because she hoped it would help her escape the church life.
Martha says that Jud’s honesty made her confess this secret to Wicks. But soon, she realized that Wicks planned to cut the diamond out of Prentice’s body, which shocked her. She believed Wicks was spreading hate and needed to be stopped.
To stop him, Martha planned the murder with Nat. They convinced Samson to be buried in Wicks’s place so they could secretly get the diamond later. They even faked Wicks’s resurrection to make people believe the church was blessed again.
Things went wrong when Nat killed Samson and blamed Jud for it. Nat then tried to kill Martha so he could keep the diamond for himself. But Martha tricked Nat into drinking poisoned coffee that was meant for her.
Martha collapses because she had already taken the rest of the poison. Benoit Blanc had figured everything out earlier but stayed quiet so Martha could confess on her own.
As Martha is dying, she prays for forgiveness from everyone she hurt — including Grace, after Jud gently asks her to do so. Father Jud gives her absolution, and just before she dies, the diamond falls from her hand, revealing the truth at last.
