Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal PVC (14 October 1950 – 16 December 1971) was an Indian Army officer and a brave tank commander. He is known as India’s greatest tank hero, with 10 confirmed enemy tanks destroyed by him.
He received India’s highest military award, the Param Vir Chakra (PVC), but after his death. He earned this honor for showing incredible courage while fighting the enemy.
Arun Khetarpal was killed in the Battle of Basantar during the Indo-Pak War of 1971, where his bravery and sacrifice made him a national hero.
Arun Khetarpal was born on 14 October 1950 in Pune, Maharashtra, into a Punjabi Hindu Khatri family.
His family originally lived in Sargodha (now in Pakistan) but moved to India as refugees after the Partition.
His father, Lt. Col. M. L. Khetarpal (who later became a Brigadier), served in the Indian Army’s Corps of Engineers.
The Khetarpal family had a long history of military service — his grandfather fought in World War I, and his great-grandfather served in the Sikh Khalsa Army.
Arun studied at St. Columba’s School in Delhi and later at The Lawrence School, Sanawar. He was a top student, a talented sportsman, and even became the school prefect.
In June 1967, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA).
He was part of Foxtrot Squadron and became the Squadron Cadet Captain of the 38th Course. Under his leadership, Foxtrot Squadron became the champions.
His NDA number was 7498/F/38.
After NDA, he joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA). In his final term, he was honored with the duty of carrying the President’s Colours, a very special responsibility.
On 13 June 1971, Arun Khetarpal was officially commissioned into the 17 Poona Horse, a famous tank regiment of the Indian Army.
