Instead, the new film connects with the original story while presenting it in a modern way. The original 1972 film, directed by Jaime de Armiñán, was considered groundbreaking. It became one of the first Spanish films to explore the intersex experience after the Franco era in Spain. The movie also received an Academy Award nomination.
In the original film, José Luis López Vázquez played Adela, a 43-year-old woman who later learns that she was born biologically male. After discovering the truth, Adela becomes Juan and leaves the small town to start a new life in the city and understand his real identity.

My Dearest Señorita Story
In the new My Dearest Señorita, Adela knows she’s different. She’s taller and stronger than other girls, has been told she can never have children, and since her teenage years, her mother has made her take estrogen pills – though she never knew why.
Adela confides in her only true friend, priest José María (Paco León), while struggling with her feelings for both the local banker boy and her grandmother’s physical therapist, Isabel (Anna Castillo).
It isn’t until her grandmother reveals that these traits run in their family that Adela visits a doctor. There, she learns she is intersex. The news is shocking and painful. Feeling betrayed by her parents for hiding the truth, Adela leaves home – no longer comfortable in her own body and desperate to discover who she really is.
It shows the pain of living in a body that doesn’t match your sense of self, while also celebrating the self‑love and queer community that can make that struggle bearable.
Anyone who has felt gender dysphoria will see themselves in Adela – also called A.D. – through both their struggles and their joys. There are moments of deep sadness, when self‑doubt feels overwhelming, and there are moments of pure happiness, reminding us that things can and will be okay.
