In 2016, Nazanin was separated from her 22-month-old daughter, accused of spying, and put in jail. Far away in London, Richard refused to give up. He spoke to the media, met officials, and started a big campaign to free her. How familiar were you with the story before playing Nazanin?

I had heard about the story on the news and social media, but I only knew a little. After I read the script and parts of Nazanin and Richard’s book A Yard of Sky, I finally understood how painful and emotional their journey really was—for both of them and their family.

Did you learn anything new while working on this project?

I was surprised by how they handled everything. I was very impressed by their strength. Their love and strong bond stood out to me. Going through something so terrible is extremely hard, but surviving it with hope and courage is truly inspiring.

What was it like playing Nazanin?

It was the most emotional role I have ever done. We filmed very heavy and intense scenes every day. Some days, I had eight emotional scenes in a row, which almost never happens in other projects. It felt like an emotional roller-coaster.

But at the end of each day, I went home to my warm bed and reminded myself that I am only acting for four months. I knew it wasn’t real. For Nazanin, this was her real life for six long years. She never knew how or when it would end.

So, I don’t think anyone can truly understand what she went through. But I tried to be honest in my performance and tell her story with respect.

Working with the children was a great experience. We had three girls—one was two years old, one was five, and one was eight. They were all at very different stages as little kids.

The two-year-old could not follow a script, so we had to improvise. But she was amazing because everything she did was natural and real. In one scene, the family visits Nazanin in prison, and I try to hide a small note inside her doll. The two-year-old saw it and kept asking, “What is that? What did you put in there?” I tried to distract her, but she didn’t stop, even with actors playing guards watching us. I couldn’t say anything, but it made the scene even better and more realistic. We just had to follow her lead.

The five-year-old was very different. She already knew her lines, so we didn’t need to improvise much. She was confident and very smart. When the camera started, she was fully ready and very professional. She was also sensitive and emotional in a good way.

The eight-year-old was sweet, kind, and a little shy, but still did a great job.

Their mothers were also wonderful. When working with children, it is very important that they have fun and that their parents support them.

Prisoner 951 Cast 2025

I was surprised by the bigger story around Nazanin and Richard. Now, when I hear news about someone being called a spy, I think it might not be simple. I also learned that many years ago, the UK owed money to Iran for tanks made in the 1970s, but because of sanctions, the debt was not paid for 40 years. When the money was finally supposed to be paid, an innocent mother and her child suffered because a country used her as pressure. It showed me how ordinary people can be caught in a very frightening situation.

What drew you to the role?

First, I loved Stephen’s writing because it felt real and powerful. The story is like a thriller, but it also shows deep emotions. I was drawn to the strong love within the family and between prisoners who help each other survive. The show mixes politics with human feelings, and both parts are connected by love and hope. That is what made me want to play the role.

Because the series has four episodes and a lot of important moments, I tried to imagine everything from Richard and Nazanin’s point of view, starting right from when it all began. The first hours and days were very scary. In episode one, Nazanin is arrested at the airport, and Richard is told there may be a problem with her passport. They don’t understand what is happening and hope she will be released in 24 hours, but she doesn’t come back. Then Richard is warned that this may be an abduction, and Nazanin goes missing. So, I focused on those first hours and days, showing their real emotions.

After that, I thought episode two should show what happens over weeks, as things slowly change. Episode three could cover months, and when Nazanin is finally sentenced and hope seems lost, the last episode would show the passing of years. This felt like the right way to tell the story—showing how time affects their lives and feelings.
