Even though his wife Sheila disagrees, Ben decides to try out for the Network and is chosen to compete on The Running Man. He agrees after the show’s producer, Dan Killian, offers him money for Cathy’s medicine and a safe place for his family.
When the hunt starts, Ben goes to New York City in disguise. But he runs away after the hunters kill another runner, Tim Jansky.
In Boston, the hunters find Ben at a hostel, and a fight breaks out, causing an explosion that kills eight Network soldiers. Ben is taken in by Bradley Throckmorton and his family, who are against the Network. Ben tries to expose the Network’s lies in a recording, but the Network changes his message using a rude deepfake. After that, Bradley’s mother kicks him out.
Another runner, Jenni Laughlin, is killed, leaving Ben as the last contestant, and many poor and working-class people start supporting him. Bradley sends Ben to Derry, Maine, to meet activist Elton Parrakis, who plans to guide Ben to a bunker to hide for the rest of the hunt. Ben stops Elton’s mother from calling the police, but Elton sets booby traps to get revenge for his father.
Ben and Elton escape in a buggy full of explosives, but McCone kills Elton. Ben crashes the buggy into another hunter on a bridge and jumps into the river to get away.
