Set in the small town of Beal City, Michigan, the story starts with two high‐school students: Lauryn Licari and her boyfriend Owen McKenny. They’ve been together since junior high and are known as the “golden couple.Lauryn begins to feel unsafe and insecure.
Owen and his mother raise alarms about the severity of the messages. The couple attempt to cope: changing phones or blocking numbers doesn’t solve the issue, because the sender uses apps and rotating spoofed numbers.With no resolution, Lauryn’s & Owen’s families appeal to the school and local police. The school’s efforts are limited and the harassment continues.
Eventually, local law-enforcement bring in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to help track the source via digital forensics (IP addresses, subpoenaed records, etc.).
In a shocking twist, the investigation reveals that the anonymous texter is not a jealous classmate or external cyber-bully—but Lauryn’s own mother, Kendra Licari. She had been using technology and fake numbers to send the messages for months.
