Vanished Season 1 Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 of Vanished begins with a biker arriving at what looks like a hotel in Marseille, France. Inside, a woman named Alice is washing blood from her hands in a sink. A knock at the door frightens her.
The biker says he has a package for her. But Alice blocks the door with a chair and escapes through the window. The man chases her. Alice is limping, and her cries for help are ignored. The man quickly catches her and pulls out a knife.
The story then moves back one week earlier. Alice arrives in France from Albania to meet her boyfriend, Tom. She is an archaeologist whose work takes her around the world. She meets Tom at a hotel, and they spend time together.
Tom avoids the topic and says it is nothing special. Alice then tells him she has received her dream job offer to teach at Princeton. She wants Tom to move to America with her. He seems unsure but finally agrees.
The next morning, Alice wakes and sees Tom on the balcony talking on the phone with his uncle, Brian. While getting ready, she sees a note in Tom’s diary. She searches it online and learns it is a jewellery shop known for engagement rings.

At breakfast, Tom says Brian arranged a special hotel stay for them in Arles. They take a train to get there. During the trip, Tom’s jokes upset an older woman sitting nearby. She becomes more critical after learning Alice and Tom are not married.
Tom receives a phone call and steps away just as the train stops. Alice takes a photo of a bridge outside and falls asleep. When she wakes, Tom has not returned. She searches the train, but he is gone. He also does not answer his phone. By now, the train is nearing Avignon.
During their argument, Alice gets a call from Tom. He says nothing. She only hears water rushing and a car door shutting. At Marseille, Helene, a translator who helped her on the train, offers to take Alice to the police. Alice refuses, thinking it is a simple mistake. Helene still gives her directions and her card.
On the way to the police station, Alice does not notice a man following her. At the station, Inspector Drax says they must wait 48 hours before calling Tom a missing person. He believes Tom may have left to avoid moving to America. Since Tom’s passport is missing, Drax does not change his mind, despite Alice’s worry.
Upset, Alice checks into a hotel. She looks again at the bridge photo she took. This reminds her of when she first met Tom four years earlier in Jordan. His car tyre had burst while he was delivering vaccines. Tom works as Director of Operations for an NGO called SOS Global, helping Syrian refugees in Jordan.
Back in the present, Alice rents a car and returns to the place where the train stopped. It is where Tom disappeared. She finds a bubblegum wrapper from Tom’s favourite brand. She remembers he offered her gum just before getting the call.
Vanished Season 1 Episode 2 Recap
He is shocked to hear that Tom is missing. Alice asks about Tom’s last phone call, but Alex says Tom was on holiday and did not need to report in. He also mentions a tragic event from nine months earlier in Jordan.
Tom had grown close to an eight-year-old boy named Malik in a refugee camp. Malik’s mother became very sick after a difficult childbirth, so Malik had to leave school. Tom promised to support the family if Malik returned to school.
The company offered mental health help and considered removing him from field work because he often disappeared for days. Alex tells Alice he will contact her if Tom appears, insisting this is likely a misunderstanding.
Back at her hotel, Alice checks Tom’s notebook and calendar. She finds a note with the name “Aurelie” and asks Helene to help. Helene is very interested and secretly reveals she has already been investigating Tom. She does not tell Alice everything. She knows Aurelie is the name of a boat and has a photo of Tom speaking with a woman on it.
Helene later takes Alice to the harbor, and they break into the boat. Alice finds Tom’s coats there and becomes angry, believing he was cheating on her. She leaves without saying goodbye to Helene.
Alice meets Alex again, and he also suggests Tom may have had an affair. He confirms Tom called Jordan on the day he vanished and advises Alice to go to Arles. Heartbroken, Alice packs her bags. She remembers the first time she brought Tom to a work party in Jordan. They sneaked into a dig site, almost got caught, and later became a couple.
On her way to the train station, Alice sees Maurice, the train conductor, and follows him to a bar where railway staff gather. She lies that she is pregnant with Maurice’s child and needs his address. The men believe her and give her the address.
She goes to the apartment building and is harassed by some men, but another woman helps her escape. Shaken, Alice reaches Maurice’s apartment. The door is open, and inside she finds Maurice on the floor with his throat cut. She moves closer to help but realizes she has disturbed the scene. From the balcony, she sees a man climbing down pipes.
A woman enters, sees Alice near the body, and thinks she is the killer. She screams for help, and Alice runs. Outside, she again encounters the gang from before. They chase her, but she hides and escapes just as police arrive.
Alice returns to her hotel and calls Alex in panic. He asks where she is and tells her to wait. After the call, he uses a burner phone to contact the biker killer and orders him to kill Alice, since she can identify him.
Meanwhile, Alice calls Helene, who asks who else knows her location. Helene tells her not to speak to anyone and to wait. At the same time, the killer rides toward Alice’s hotel. The story connects back to the opening scene of Episode 1. Just as the killer is about to stab Alice, Helene arrives and hits him with her car. Alice jumps into Helene’s car, and they escape.
During the drive, Helene asks who knew Alice’s hotel. Only Alex and Inspector Drax knew. Helene suspects one of them is behind the attempt on Alice’s life. Alice then asks how Helene knew where Tom worked. Helene finally admits she believes Tom got off the train because of her. She offers to take Alice to collect her bags and then move her to a safe place.
Vanished Season 1 Episode 3 Recap
Episode 3 of Vanished begins with Alice remembering a visit to Tom in Jordan. At the refugee camp, she once walked in on him having a tense talk with Mira. Tom quickly said it was just work. Mira greeted Alice coldly and reminded Tom they still had to finish something about a refugee.
In the present, Alice is hiding at Helene’s apartment. She wakes up and studies Helene’s evidence board. Curious, she searches Helene online and learns she was once fired for publishing a fake story. Later, Helene explains about a company called Kalco. SOS Global works with it on aid projects, but Helene discovered it is actually a fake company.
Alice suddenly remembers she once took a photo with Tom outside Kalco’s office in Jordan. She shows it to Helene. Their talk turns serious as Helene wonders if Tom could be involved in human trafficking. Alice refuses to believe it and calls Helene a conspiracy theorist.
That day, the two women secretly follow Alex. They see him go to the port. Alice realizes a receipt she found among Tom’s things might be for a shipping container. Then they see Alex secretly meeting Inspector Drax. Now they start wondering if the two men are connected.
Things get worse when they see Alex meeting Tom. Alice is shocked and furious. She orders Helene to follow Tom’s taxi. Traffic slows them down, so Alice panics and runs after the taxi on foot.
She finally reaches Tom outside an event where Mira is waiting. Seeing how close Tom and Mira act, Alice becomes convinced they are having an affair. Tom apologizes for how he ended things and tells Alice to leave. When Alice mentions Malik, Tom looks confused, as if he does not know the name. Mira arrives, and Tom says clearly that he and Alice are over before going inside with her.
Vanished Season 1 Episode 4 Ending Explained
Episode 4 of Vanished starts with Alice and Helene opening a container. Inside, they find women and children locked up. They are shocked by what they see. Before they can react, Said, the assassin, arrives with other men. The men notice the broken lock. They also hear Alice and Helene trying to run away.
Alice and Helene try to escape by jumping across containers. But they slip and fall. They lose consciousness. While unconscious, Alice remembers her happy moments with Tom. She thinks about the beautiful times they shared.
Does Alex murder Alice?
Alex orders Said to kill Alice right away. Just as Said pulls out his knife, ready for revenge, Tom suddenly shoots him. A tense standoff begins as Alex and Mira realize Tom is not on their side. By then, Drax and his men also arrive at the scene, and he orders everyone to stand down.
Alex tries to blame Tom. But it does not work because Tom is secretly working with Interpol. As the standoff continues, Helene finds a gun and shoots at Alex. He shoots back and hits her arm. A shootout starts while Tom tries to keep Alice safe. Mira sees them running and follows, just as Tom notices Alex escaping.
Tom chases Alex, and Alice runs after them. Another shootout happens in the streets between Tom and Alex. After some time, Tom finally catches him. They fight hand to hand until Alice steps in and knocks Alex unconscious.
Alice confronts Tom, angry that he hid his undercover mission with Interpol. Drax reaches just in time and kills Mira. Before taking Tom away for questioning, he lets him talk to Alice.
Tom is clearly sorry he did not tell Alice about his undercover work. He explains that Interpol recruited him three years ago.
Since then, he has been trying to get close to Alex and Mira, who are always paranoid and very careful. He also reveals that Alex was the one who ordered him to leave the train because he was being followed, while Maurice stayed on it.
