Mary Poppins Returns Movie Story
Mary Poppins Returns is a 2018 musical fantasy comedy movie. It was directed by Rob Marshall and written by David Magee. The film is based on the Mary Poppins books by P. L. Travers and is a sequel to the 1964 classic Mary Poppins. Emily Blunt plays Mary Poppins, with other stars like Lin‑Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, and David Warner (in his last movie).
The story takes place in London during the Great Depression. Mary Poppins comes back to help Jane and Michael Banks after Michael’s wife passes away.

During the Great Depression, Michael Banks lives in his old London home with his three children — John, Annabel, and Georgie. His wife Kate passed away one year ago, and Michael is still very sad and worried about raising the kids on his own. Michael borrowed money from the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, where he works, but he is now three months behind on his payments.
The bank’s new and dishonest boss, Wilkins, sends people to warn Michael that his house will be taken away if he does not pay all the money by Friday.
Michael goes to the bank to prove he owns shares, but Wilkins lies and secretly destroys the record. Annabel and John think about selling their mother’s special bowl to pay the debt. Georgie tries to stop them, and the bowl breaks during their fight. Later, Jack the lamplighter (who once worked with Bert) meets Mary Poppins and joins her and the kids on a magical trip inside the bowl’s picture. At the Royal Doulton Music Hall, Georgie is kidnapped by a talking wolf, weasel, and badger who are taking their things. Annabel and John bravely set out to save him.

The children visit Mary Poppins’s cousin Topsy to fix the broken bowl, but they find out it isn’t worth much money. Later, they take Michael’s briefcase to the bank and overhear Wilkins talking about taking their house. Georgie thinks Wilkins is part of the animal gang that kidnapped him, so he interrupts the meeting. Michael gets upset with the kids for risking his job and the house. Mary Poppins takes them home with help from Jack and the lamplighters, who teach them fun rhyming slang. The children cheer up Michael, and they all make peace.
By Friday night, the family gets ready to leave their home. While looking at his old kite, Michael discovers Georgie had used the missing share certificate to patch it. Jane and Michael hurry to the bank, while Mary Poppins, Jack, and the kids climb Big Ben to turn the clock back five minutes. This gives Jane and Michael just enough time to save the house.
For many years, people have loved Mary Poppins (1964), and some even call it one of the greatest movies ever made. Travers’s stories, has touched audiences both as children and as parents. Its songs still bring joy and tears.
Years later came Mary Poppins Returns (2018). Emily Blunt plays Mary Poppins, while Lin‑Manuel Miranda is Jack, the cheerful lamplighter. Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw play Jane and Michael, the grown‑up Banks children who need Mary’s help again.
The movie may not be ‘practically perfect,’ but it is charming and heartfelt. Director Rob Marshall takes us back to 1930s London and to 17 Cherry Tree Lane. Michael now has three kids—Annabel, John, and Georgie—but has lost his wife. He risks losing his house too, and must find proof of his father’s bank shares. Like his dad, Michael has forgotten what really matters, until Mary Poppins returns to remind him.
