At the start of the movie, a group of elders scolds Cherry’s husband, Jerome, because he hasn’t been able to have a child with her. They give him 101 nights to fix the problem. Jerome makes a strange bet with him: if Manfred can win over Cherry while Jerome is away, Jerome will give her to Manfred along with his castle. If Manfred fails, Jerome gets Manfred’s castle instead. Either way, poor Cherry ends up in a tricky situation.
In Greenberg’s book, Cherry and Hero are already secretly in love and work together to outsmart the men. In the movie, their love keeps growing while Manfred tries to win Cherry over the old-fashioned way, like giving her compliments and showing up with a freshly hunted stag. It’s a wild mix of romance and funny attempts to impress!
Every night, Hero tells such amazing bedtime stories that Manfred can’t go through with trying to woo Cherry. Most of Hero’s stories are about three beautiful sisters, daughters of a merchant, who create a secret group of women who collect and write down stories.
