The Hawk Series Story Review
The Hawk is Will Ferrell’s first time leading a scripted TV comedy. Sadly, it turns out to be a disappointment. Fans had been waiting for this project since 2023, when it was reported as a satire of the Saudi‑backed LIV Golf Tour. But in the final version, LIV is barely mentioned.
Instead, the focus is on Ferrell’s character Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, an aging golfer trying to return to the PGA Tour, and his son Lance (Jimmy Tatro), now a pro himself.
The show took so long to arrive that it was overshadowed by Owen Wilson’s Stick on Apple TV. That series explained golf better and used Wilson’s star power without losing the story. The Hawk, by contrast, feels stuck glorifying Lonnie above all else.
Lonnie is a typical Ferrell character — selfish, shameless, and clueless about how his actions affect others. His quirks, like imagining himself shredding air guitar before a swing, are funny but shallow. The creative team, including Harper Steele and Chris Henchy, keep the tone light but avoid deeper satire.
The inciting incident is the death of Hawk’s longtime caddy Old Henry (Keith David). His replacement, Sam (Fortune Feimster), brings comic energy but disappears for much of the season. The show resists giving credit to anyone but Lonnie, making his comeback feel random.
Lance’s arc is stronger. His strict discipline, shaped by his father’s absence, begins to crack under pressure. Tatro plays him well, but female characters like Natalie (Katelyn Taver) and Stacy (Molly Shannon) are underwritten. Natalie is reduced to a voice of reason, while Stacy is wasted in a one‑note role.
The biggest issue is Lonnie himself. He’s annoying enough to tire viewers but never sharp enough to be truly edgy. The show softens him, refusing to let him be a full villain or a full clown. As a result, The Hawk lacks bite, satire, and emotional weight.
In the end, Lonnie feels like a watered‑down version of a Danny McBride character. The show misses the chance to reflect its cultural moment. Instead, it drifts along, halfheartedly chasing themes of family and comeback. Fans of Ferrell may find moments to enjoy, but overall, The Hawk doesn’t inspire the same excitement as his past work.
