Chan is talking on the phone with a woman named Song Ha-ran. Chan is in Boston, while Ha-ran is in South Korea. Chan is serious and rarely smiles. Ha-ran is bright and cheerful. Chan gets a pen engraved with her name and sends it to her. Later, she tells him she won a design contest using that pen. She also says she loves the smell of rain, and Chan draws a cute cartoon girl sneezing in the rain for her.

Back in Seoul, we learn that Chan is the younger brother of Ha-ran’s boss, Eun-chan. The office team is about to get a four-day holiday. Ha-ran sees a plane leaving a trail in the sky and feels inspired. She suddenly decides to visit Chan. She sends him a video message saying she is coming and also tells him she loves him.

Chan only watches the message after she has already landed in Boston and is on her way to his university. He runs toward a set of blue doors and is about to open them when a huge explosion throws him backward. Ha-ran reaches the university and sees firefighters and police everywhere. She then gets a call from Eun-chan, who tells her that Chan did not survive.

The story jumps ahead seven years. A fashion shoot is taking place at Nana Atelier, created by famous South Korean designer Kim Na-na. She is also Ha-ran’s grandmother. Ha-ran now works there as a top designer. But she is no longer the cheerful girl she once was. She has become distant and quiet, often keeping to herself and lost in her thoughts.

Meanwhile, Seonu Chan arrives in South Korea with his colleague Ben. He has burn scars on his arm, but he seems like a different person now — warm, happy, and always smiling. He greets people with hugs. He and Ben have come for a work project, but Chan is also excited to explore his hometown again.
